Do you Know These 5 Tips to Get the Best Mp3 Player for Listening to Old Time Radio?

If you are looking to buy an MP3 player for listening to old time radio shows, or spoken word in general, there are several important factors that should concern you. These factors might not be at the top of the list if youre buying one to listen just to music, but if youre an old time radio fan theyre well worth remembering.

1. Look for a player that has a good graphic equalizer feature.

With the graphic equalizer you can fine tune what you hear, much better than a treble selector or a bass button. Instead of just being able to adjust the bass (deep sounds) or the treble (high frequency sounds) you have much more control. Usually, there will be five or more sliders. The slider to the right will adjust the very high frequencies and the slider to the left will adjust the very low-level bass sounds. The three or more sliders in the middle will adjust various aspects of the midrange.

Imagine you were listening to an old time radio show that had a bit too much hiss. To get rid of this with a graphic equalizer all you would do as lower the slider on the right (thats the high frequency one) and youll notice the hiss either vanishes completely or is greatly reduced.

The great thing with graphic equalizers is that they really can improve the listening experience, which is particularly useful with old radio shows. Rather than just settle for poor sound quality you can actually do something about it if you have a good graphic equalizer.

2. Get a player that can act as a virtual hard drive

Many players (not the iPod Im afraid) will act as an additional hard drive when you plug them into your USB port. This is very convenient if you have many shows to copy over. All you need to do is copy the folders from your normal hard drive and then paste them straight onto your player. No need to mess around with third-party software such as iTunes or Windows Media Player. It makes it so quick and easy that you can copy hundreds of files in just a matter of minutes.

Regrettably, if you happen to love iPods, you need to use iTunes all the time. For some people this is fine, but for most people it is much quicker and easier just to quickly select files from one folder and paste them into another folder. If you choose your player right youll be able to do exactly that.

3. Make sure your player remembers where you are

Some players have a frustrating habit of returning you to the start of the file if you happen to switch the device off when youre halfway through listening to a show.

This is not good as it means that when you switch your MP3 player on next time, you will need to try finding the exact point that you were listening to.

Its also worth checking to see if the player you are thinking about getting has a bookmarking feature. Many players will allow you to set a bookmark at any point in the recording so you can return to that point whenever you like. This is very useful if, for example, you want to break off listening to an old time radio show or audiobook and listen to some music for a while. If youve set a bookmark you can quickly return to the exact point you were at. This could be later the same day, a few days later or even many months later. Its a neat feature thats well worth having.

4. An auto-off feature

If you enjoy listening to old time radio shows in bed its well worth checking to make sure the player you are thinking about has an auto-off feature. Without such a feature it means the player will continue to play until the batteries run flat, which isnt ideal.

Some players have a sleep facility that lets you set a specific time, after which the player will turn itself off automatically. Others, such as the creative, offer a permanent auto-off feature that will turn the player off if no buttons are pressed for a set period of time. This can be very useful as it means that even if you forget to set the sleep-timer the player will turn itself off after an hour, or whatever length of time youve set for the auto-off timer.

5. Sufficient space for all your audio files

When buying a player its important to consider how much space you will need for files.

Its easy to think that the more space the better, but this isnt always the best way to approach the matter.

For example, theres no point getting a player with 60 gig of space if youre just going to use a couple GBs. Equally, its not wise to buy a player with only 1 gig of memory if youre planning on copying your whole old-time radio show collection onto it.

Personally, I prefer a smaller sized player, such as the Creative Zen Plus, with 8 gig of memory than a larger sized player, in physical terms, with 50+ gig on it. From experience I know that Im never going to fill more than 5 or 6 gig at any one time and so anything more would be a waste.

The easiest way to calculate how much space you need is to remember that a typical old time radio show is roughly seven megabytes and a typical music track is usually about five megabytes. So, on a 4 meg player youd be able to store roughly 570 old time radio shows (thats about 285 hours of listening) or 800 music tracks, which is about 80 full CDs. On an 8 meg player youd get twice this amount, which for most people is more than enough.

Another benefit of the smaller players is the storage tends to be solid-state, rather than a mini hard drive, which means theyre quite elastic and harder to damage if if you drop them by any chance.

I hope that these five tips will help you in your quest to get the right player for your needs. Whatever you do, don’t get overwhelmed by the wide variety of players now available.

Just use these five tips and you’ll be able to eliminate over seventy percent of them straight away, which will give you a much more manageable list to select from.

Two-Way Radios Make For Great Communication

A second series of radios, the RDX series, is a robust and nicely designed series with great audio quality and a long battery life (up to 26 hours (more than a day would work for most businesses).  A few of the features include:  They are designed for structures up to thirty floors or 350,000 square feet; and they have up to 5 watts of output power; PC programming features (very handy for records); frequencies (89) and 122 privacy codes; sixteen channels and lithium ion battery (long-lasting); multi-channel scanning capable; optional AA battery tray; high and ultra-high capacity batteries; durable two-pin audio jack; optional LCD models; plus superior audio quality.

Two-way radios may be used, and often are,  in hospitals or other health facilities in admitting, emergency services waiting areas, same-day surgery, hospital pharmacies and outpatient clinics.  Discreet (HIPAA compliant), efficient, communications between patients, families and staff are necessary in patient waiting areas, family waiting areas, and in staff-to-staff and communication.   Medical communications have to be accurate in order to reduce stress on loved ones.

The iPod shuffle weighs a mere 15.6 grams (0.55 ounces), and measures just 27.3 mm (1.07 inches) high by 41.2 mm (1.62 inches) wide by 10.5 mm (0.41 inch) deep (and this depth, by the way, includes the clip). It is the ultimate portable music player, encased in robust aluminium that resists the smearing caused by dirty or damp fingers.

There’s also a choice of five colours: blue, green, pink, red and silver. A range of hues may not seem significant, but if you fix your iPod shuffle to your clothes like a badge, you may want a preferred colour.

The device that holds the iPod shuffle in place on your clothes or bag, incidentally, is a clip fixed to the back. Any such clip must be secure and reliable: if you’re jogging, working out, or commuting to and from school or work, you don’t want to drop or lose such a tiny piece of electronic equipment. The clip on the iPod shuffle feels completely trustworthy.

Features

The main feature of the iPod shuffle is the offset ergonomic ring that has the volume, previous/rewind, and next/fast forward controls, with the play/pause button in the middle. Both the ring and button respond positively and feel good to the touch. They give you the confidence to use them without needing to watch what you’re doing – a handy ability if you’re squashed amidst commuters on a bus or train.

The on/off control is neatly located on the bottom, together with the shuffle switch. This switch lets you hear your songs in random order, or listen to them in your chosen sequence.

There are two status lights on the iPod shuffle, one on the top, and one on the bottom. The different messages the lights can give you may take a while to learn, but the most important – the battery status indicator – is straightforward. A green light means you have a 30% – 100% charge; an amber light means you have a low charge, somewhere between 10% and 30%; and a red light indicates you have less than 10% of power remaining. At other times, the status lights tell you when you’ve pressed a certain button, and whether the iPod shuffle is up and running as an external storage disc. They also warn you if there’s a problem.

One of the two accessories that accompany the iPod shuffle is a set of earphones. These rest comfortably in each ear and have an adjustable cable. If you’re happy to use less discrete headphones, different manufacturers offer a compatible range.

The other accessory is the USB dock. The iPod shuffle slips easily into position on the dock using the earphone port as the connection. There’s also plenty of cable from the dock to a USB 2.0 port on your computer.

Once you connect the iPod shuffle, iTunes appears on the computer screen. If you’re already familiar with iTunes, you’ll know what to expect. If not, it’s worth bearing in mind that iTunes is not just software that enables you to organise and transfer music to your iPod shuffle. The iTunes Store, for instance, lets you buy songs and albums, plus audiobooks and podcasts (although many podcasts are free).

As for the other iTunes features, use them to place the content of your CDs on your iPod shuffle; put your music into playlists; create automatic music updates; arrange the order of your songs; set the same sound level for different tracks; and adjust the volume limit. In other words, your iPod shuffle may not have a built-in screen, but you can still view and control your content through iTunes.

Technology

The iPod shuffle comes in two versions. The 1GB holds around 1,000 playback minutes – or approximately 240 songs. The 2GB model can take about 500 songs. The audio compression format that achieves this is 128Kbps AAC (advanced audio coding).

The iPod shuffle also supports further audio formats, including AAC (8 – 320Kbps); MP3 (8 – 320 Kbps); MP3 VBR; Audible (formats 2, 3 and 4); AIFF (audio interchange file format); and WAV (Waveform). You’re unlikely to need anything else in the normal course of events.

Frequency response is 20Hz to 20,000Hz, which is exactly what you need for high quality sound reproduction.

Performance

A music player is all about ease of use and sound quality. When you start using the iPod shuffle’s controls and connect it to iTunes, you will have no doubts about the versatility and simplicity of this device. When you plug in your earphones and begin listening, you also experience first class sound quality with a wide volume range. The maximum volume is so high, in fact, you may want to restrict it via iTunes.

The other key performance factor for a portable music player is battery life. Despite the iPod shuffle’s tiny dimensions, the built-in battery keeps going for 12 hours. You can then charge it using the USB dock or connect it to an Apple USB Power Adaptor (available separately). Either way, you’ll be 80% charged from empty in two hours, and fully operational in four.
