Oprah Winfrey opens new season with Michael Phelps, other Olympians

Gold medallists Michael Phelps, Nastia Liukin and Kobe Bryant, along with 150 other U.S. Olympic team members, will be on the season premiere of "The Oprah Winfrey Show."Winfrey plans to tape the show at Chicago's Millennium Park on Wednesday.

Harpo Productions says Winfrey intends the show as a "welcome home celebration" and a chance to showcase Chicago as the city bids for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Phelps trained for several years in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Other athletes expected to attend include the beach volleyball gold medal team of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, gold medal basketball players Carmelo Anthony, Lisa Leslie and Dwyane Wade, and silver medal swimmer Dara Torres.

The 23rd season premiere of Winfrey's talk show will air Sept. 8.

CAKETIME: HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY TO MICHAEL JACKSON.

He's been the King of Pop, the cute phenomenon in a 70s super group and a shunned star.And now the man who has fascinated the world, for better or worse, since he was just a child is turning 50. It's been a tough road for Michael Jackson. The highs have indeed been high - his 1980s album Thriller is still the biggest selling LP ever released. And the lows have been horrendous - whether it be bankruptcy or defending himself against charges of child molestation.

Born in 1958, Jackson was thrust into the limelight at just 11 when he became the star turn in the wildly popular group, The Jackson Five. He began his solo career while still with his band of brothers, recording mega-hits like Ben and Got To Be There. But it was in the 1980s that Jackson hit the heights of his career - and what heights they were. First came Off The Wall, an album that spawned huge hits like Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough and Rock With You. And then came Thriller. The album swept all before it - winning seven Grammy awards and going on to become the biggest-selling album of all time. Enormously catchy tracks like Beat It and Billie Jean became the soundtrack to the early 1980s. But by the middle of the decade, the world's love affair with Jackson began to sour.

He was said to have slept in an oxygen chamber, his radical cosmetic surgery operations became all too obvious and his best friend was allegedly a chimp called Bubbles. All were mercilessly parodied and Jackson became less an object of adulation, more an object of fun. Soon came sagging album sales, short-lived marriages - including one to Elvis Presley's daughter Lisa-Marie - and rafts of bizarre stories that, while probably untrue, proved all too believable.

But it was the unsavoury allegations of child molestation that, perhaps sadly, became to define him. In the early 1990s, his career barely survived allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a young boy. In 2003, he was charged with child molestation and faced an ugly trial and all manner of sordid accusations. He was acquitted, but his public reputation was badly damaged. Soon he was roaming the world, an object of scorn, parody or both.

It's been a long and difficult road for the King of Pop. Is it over? Can he ever repair the damage done? Perhaps we'll know in another 50 years.

To mark the big occasion PopEater.com invited Jacko devotees to decide the star's number one track - and Thriller was the clear winner, capturing 42 per cent of more than 50,000 votes. The song appeared on Jackson's 1982 album of the same name - which became the world's best-selling LP, shifting more than 100 million copies worldwide.

A mega-rare MICHAEL JACKSON record is up for auction - and is expected to fetch a stunning $10,000.The promo CD, said to be one of only 10 in the world, has gone on sale on the eBay website. It contains an early demo of an unreleased Jackson song - Men In Black along with an alternative version of Black or White and Too Much Monkey Business. MICHAEL JACKSON has launched a gaming contest to run across three social network websites, with a prize of two round-the-world plane tickets for the lucky winner. Users of Facebook, MySpace and Bebo will compete against each other to win an online dance-off where they get to control Jackson's stage routines. The game allows members to control a replica of Jackson and direct his trademark moves. Smaller prizes, including iPods, will be given out daily. The top five players will then compete to win two round-the-world plane tickets - or a TV and PlayStation 3, if the winner is under 18.

MICHAEL JACKSON's legendary album THRILLER has been added to the U.S. National Recording Registry, which preserves records deemed "culturally and aesthetically significant". The archive, run by the U.S. Library of Congress, has saved the "best existing version" of the 1982 LP in a bid to preserve Jackson's music for future generations.
Each year the organisation chooses recordings to be added to the country's official archive, and 2008 - the year the King of Pop turns 50 - was deemed the right time to honour Jackson's musical achievements.

MICHAEL JACKSON's record company has released a "fans' favourite" compilation album - to celebrate the legendary singer turning 50. Fans across the world were given the chance to vote for their most beloved Jackson tracks ever, after record label Sony BMG announced it was releasing a new LP, titled King of Pop, in honour of the star's half century celebrations. Countries in Europe, Australasia and Asia had their own internet forums for fans to pick their favourite tunes for the compilation, with 1983 hit single Billie Jean making the top of the LP wishlist in 10 out of the 11 countries taking part in the vote. TV mogul OPRAH WINFREY came out in support of U.S. presidential hopeful BARACK OBAMA on Thursday (28Aug08) - and burst into tears when the Democrat accepted his nomination. The legendary chatshow host, who has urged her viewers to vote for the Illinois senator, turned up at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado to back the politician. And Winfrey said she was moved to tears by Barack Obama's acceptance speech.

She says, "I cried my eyelashes off. I think it's the most powerful thing I have ever experienced." Obama accepted the nomination for presidency in front of 84,000 people on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I have a dream" speech. Winfrey adds, "He's not an African-American candidate. He's a candidate for Americans.

CAKE FROM HELL: Magazine Recalled After Recipe Typo Leads to Poisoned Readers!

A small typo in the ingredients required for a cake recipe printed in 10,000 copies of a Swedish food magazine caused a huge problem after poisoning people who made it, AFP reported.

The magazines have since been recalled after four people experienced symptoms of poisoning, including dizziness and headaches. "There was a mistake in a recipe for apple cake. Instead of calling for two pinches of nutmeg it said 20 nutmeg nuts were needed," Matmagasinet's Chief Editor Ulla Cocke told AFP. "We know that four adults ate one cake made from this recipe, and they didn't feel well," she said, adding that "this is obviously very regrettable."

When Matmagasinet first spotted the recipe typo it sent its 50,000 subscribers a letter, and placed a leaflet in store copies, warning people that “high doses of nutmeg can cause poisoning symptoms,” AFP reported. "At first we thought this would be enough, because we didn't really think anyone would bake or eat this cake, since so much nutmeg would give it a horrible, bitter taste, and because it is simply not that easy to get hold of that much nutmeg," Cocke said.

But when the editors realized people had actually eaten and been poisoned by the cake, they immediately recalled all the store copies. "We publish 1,200 recipes each year, and of course there have been times when they've had a bit too much butter or too little flour, but we have never experienced anything like this before," Cocke told AFP.

PHELPSTASTIC: Michael Phelps to do a cameo in HBO's Entourage!

Olympic golden boy Michael Phelps is set to make a cameo appearance in the hit HBO series 'Entourage'. The swim star will be seen with Kevin Connolly in the fifth season of the show, which debuts September 7, reports Us magazine.com

Phelps, who won eight gold medals in Beijing will also been seen hosting the 34th-season premiere of Saturday Night Live on September 13 and will be a guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on September 13 on NBC.

Rumours are abuzz that MTV Video Music Awards have convinced the 23-year-old to appear at the kudosfest on September 9. Phelps has also landed a book deal for his memoir, titled 'Built to Succeed'.

Ex-Radio Host Gets 7 Years For Child Porn!

A former San Francisco radio talk show host and former Roman Catholic priest was sentenced to more than seven years in prison Thursday for distributing child pornography.

Bernie Ward, 57, pleaded guilty in May to one count of distributing child pornography. Prosecutors said investigators found dozens of pornographic images of children as young as 3 on Ward's home computer, including masochistic images of children bound and gagged.

"He traded in the currency of children's suffering," federal prosecutor Steve Grocki said. Ward, a father of four known for his staunchly liberal views, hosted a nightly radio show until the station fired him when the child pornography indictment was made public in December.

MEDIA ATTENTION: WOMAN KILLS HIT MAN HIRED BY HER HUSBAND!

A emergency room nurse in Portland, Oregon has killed a hit man who tried to murder her with a hammer after being hired by her estranged husband, according to local TV station KATU Thursday.

Susan Kuhnhausen, 51, choked the man to death after he attacked her as she returned home from work earlier this month. On Wednesday police arrested her husband Michael Kuhnhausen, 58, charging that he hired the hitman, 59-year-old Edward Dalton Haffey, to murder his wife. He was charged with conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder. Kuhnhausen was ordered held on $500,000 bail.

Susan Kuhnhausen was not seriously hurt in the attack and was released from hospital after treatment for minor injuries. The couple were in the process of getting a divorce, and she told officers 'her husband was distraught about the divorce and wanting to reconcile but that she was insisting on the divorce,' prosecutors said in a court affidavit.

FOCK THAT! MSNBC Host Rips AP Reporter's Analysis of Obama Speech!

In an unusually heated attack on a veteran political reporter by a cable news host, MSNBC's Keith Olbermann laced into the Associated Press's Charles Babington an hour after Barack Obama had concluded his speech in Denver on Thursday night.

Nearly all of the top commentators and reporters on the three cable news networks had hailed Obama's speech as something new and powerful, and filled with specifics, and predicted it would have a positive effect on his chances vs. John McCain. This hallelujah chorus included conservatives such as Bill Kristol and Pat Buchanan and the longtime Republican David Gergen, as well as Tom Brokaw and Brian Williams. Buchanan called it the best and most important political convention speech he had ever heard, going back 48 years.

So the liberal Olbermann was outraged that the AP's Babington had written, in his analysis of the speech, just off the wire, that Obama had tried nothing new and that his speech was lacking in specifics. He read the first few paragraphs on the air, lamented that it would be printed in hundred of newspapers on Friday, and concluded, "It is analysis that strikes me as having borne no resemblance to the speech you and I just watched. None whatsoever. And for it to be distributed by the lone national news organization in terms of wire copy to newspapers around the country and web sites is a remarkable failure of that news organization.

Muppet Show to make TV comeback after 27 years!

The Muppet Show is poised to return to TV for its first series in 27 years. Jim Henson created 'Kermit' the frog and his comedy pals could be on their way back thanks to a new Disney film. The comedy show, which ran from 1976 to 1981, won an Emmy in 1978 for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series.

In the movie, written by Forgetting Sarah Marshall star and writer Jason Segel, the Muppets reunite to save their studio with one last variety show. Should the film go well, it opens up the possibility of a television programme, also written by 28-year-old Segel. "Jason is a massive Muppets fan and is seen as the man to finally bring The Muppet Show back to TV. It will obviously have all its old fans but Jason's comedy is hugely popular with youngsters so it will open it up to a whole new audience," Telegraph quoted a source, as saying.

The source added: "If the movie script is popular Jason will write the TV series too. He is already coming up with ideas for it." Although there have been a number of spin-offs, including Muppets Tonight in 1996, The Muppet Show originally ran from 1976 to 1981, and made famous characters such as Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and Gonzo. In the original series, Kermit, arguably the world's most famous frog, was the show's stage manager, attempting to keep order amidst the chaos, while being pursued by Miss Piggy.

CANADIAN JOURNALISM STUDENT RAPED IN FRANCE!

A Canadian journalism student was raped in an isolated forest in northern France as she reported on a makeshift camp housing illegal immigrants trying to get to Britain, officials said Thursday. The woman -- whose identity was not disclosed -- went Tuesday evening to the forest nicknamed "The Jungle" to carry out a photo reportage, said the local prosecutor's office in the port city of Calais. "There she was the victim of a rape perpetrated by an individual who is now being sought," it said in a statement. "The Jungle," which lies close to the ferry terminal in Calais, is home to hundreds of illegal immigrants looking for an opportunity to cross the English Channel into Britain and is also frequented by human traffickers.

It is dotted with shelters made out of plastic sheets and camp-fires built by the migrants. It was in one of these makeshift tents, which are frequently demolished by police, that the woman was raped, a source close to the inquiry said, adding that "at this point there is no certitude that (the rapist) is a migrant." Sources close to the enquiry said 150 illegals -- mostly from the Middle East -- were detained by police on Wednesday and questioned, while a victims' support unit has given help to the woman, who is believed to be 31 years old. An official in the Canadian embassy in Paris said it was aware of the case, and confirmed that the woman was Canadian. The British consulate in the northern city of Lille said the woman attended a London journalism school.

Monique Delannoy, from the Belle Etoile aid group which provides meals to the migrants, told AFP: "I always advise journalists not to visit the squats, and I even discourage people working for us from going there." "Because of the summer holidays, there is no one from any aid groups on site after 6 p.m.," she said. Delannoy said that in mid-August, her charity had counted 450 migrants in and around the forest, all but 30 of them men.

MISCOMMUNICATION: Telus draws fire for cancelling 'unlimited' data plan!

Telus Corp. has drawn the ire of wireless customers by cancelling one of its unlimited data plans and dropping some subscribers for "abusing" its network.

The Vancouver-based company has discontinued the Connect 75 Unlimited plan it was selling in conjunction with a wireless aircard, which plugs into a laptop computer and connects to the internet via a cellphone network. The plan had cost $75 plus other charges and offered unlimited downloading, but Telus is now urging customers to move onto a $65 service that provides only one gigabyte of data per month, with each extra gigabyte costing $10. R.I.P: Cancer claims noted Quebec journalist Vastel.

Michel Vastel, a prominent Quebec journalist, author and political commentator, died Thursday after a battle with cancer. He was 68. Vastel was born in France where he began his career as a journalist. Upon arrival in Canada in 1970, he worked for the Quebec government and the Conseil du patronat employers group before kicking off his journalism career in this country. He wrote for Montreal dailies Le Devoir, La Presse and Le Journal de Montreal, Quebec City's Le Soleil, Le Droit in Ottawa, as well as the Quebec news magazine L'actualité.

Vastel also worked for Montreal radio station CKAC and Radio-Canada, the CBC's French-language network. He was based in Ottawa for 17 years before coming to Montreal in 1995. A prolific author, Vastel penned the biographies of three former Quebec premiers – Robert Bourassa, Lucien Bouchard and Bernard Landry – and of former prime minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau.

His most recent book, published in 2005, was a biography of Quebec singer Nathalie Simard. Carole Beaulieu, editor-in-chief of L'actualité, wrote on the magazine's internet site that Vastel was "one of the French-language journalists who has left his mark on the coverage of Canadian politics in the last 40 years." A note from Vastel was posted on his blog Thursday, commenting on his announced retirement and wishing his readers well.

INSPIRATION: COCAINE ADDICT TURN MEDIA COLUMNIST!

When reporter David Carr began thinking about writing his life story, he found he couldn't trust his own memory. Was it his best friend who pulled the gun on Carr some 20 years ago when Carr -- fired from a job and thrown out of a bar -- tried to kick in his friend's front door and broke a window, as Carr remembered it, or was it Carr himself who held the gun?

MEDIA ATTENTION: Air Canada removes life vests to lighten planes!

When we start showing up on CNN as taking life vests off the planes on Air Canada jazz, all we need now is a CRASH. Who's fockin idea was that? An official with Air Canada's regional carrier Jazz says the airline is removing life vests from all its planes to save weight and fuel.

Jazz spokeswoman Manon Stuart said Thursday that Transport Canada regulations allow airlines to use flotation devices instead of life vests, provided the planes remain within 50 miles of shore. Safety cards in the seat pockets of Jazz aircraft now direct passengers to use the seat cushions as flotation devices. Stuart says Jazz is a transcontinental carrier that doesn't fly over the ocean. DIANA PEREIRA: Be flexible with your time and learn to wear different hats. In today's multimedia world, one has to do interviews, write scripts, write web copy, produce audio and video, blog... and breathe.

R.I.P: '100 Things' author Dave Freeman dies at 47!

Dave Freeman, co-author of "100 Things to Do Before You Die," a travel guide and ode to odd adventures that inspired readers and imitators, died after hitting his head in a fall at his home. He was 47. Freeman died August 17 after the fall at his Venice home, his father, Roy Freeman, told the Los Angeles Times on Monday. An advertising agency executive, Freeman co-wrote the 1999 book subtitled "Travel Events You Just Can't Miss" with Neil Teplica. It was based on the Web site whatsgoingon.com, which the pair ran together from 1996 to 2001.

"This life is a short journey," the book says. "How can you make sure you fill it with the most fun and that you visit all the coolest places on earth before you pack those bags for the very last time?" Freeman's relatives said he visited about half the places on his list before he died, and either he or Teplica had been to nearly all of them.

"He didn't have enough days, but he lived them like he should have," Teplica said. The book's recommendations ranged from the obvious -- attending the Academy Awards and running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain -- to the more obscure -- taking a voodoo pilgrimage in Haiti and "land diving" on the Island of Vanuatu, which Freeman once called "the original bungee jumping." It included goofy graphics with each entry, indicating that some activities were "down and dirty," and others "grandma friendly."

The success of "100 Things" inspired dozens of like-minded books, with titles such as "100 Things Project Managers Should Do Before They Die" and "100 Things Cowboys Fans Should Know and Do Before They Die." Freeman graduated from the University of Southern California in 1983, briefly working for an ad agency in Newport Beach before moving to New York to work for Grey Advertising. On September 11, 2001, Freeman watched the second plane hit the World Trade Center from his apartment just blocks away. He moved back to Southern California to be closer to his family.

STABBED IN THE BACK: Mattel wins Bratz copyright suit!

A federal jury awarded Mattel Inc. $100 million in damages on Tuesday in a federal copyright lawsuit that pitted the house of Barbie against MGA Entertainment Inc., the maker of the saucy Bratz dolls. Damages were awarded for contract interference and copyright infringement. No punitive damages were ordered against MGA. The same jury that decided the damages phase concluded last month that Bratz designer Carter Bryant came up with the Bratz concept while working at Mattel.

In his closing arguments, Mattel attorney John Quinn said MGA owed Mattel at least $1 billion in Bratz profits and interest, while MGA chief executive Isaac Larian aided in the breach of contract and owed nearly $800 million for his complicity. MGA attorneys countered that the jury should award Mattel as little as $30 million because the company had built the doll line's value with smart additions, branding and packaging.

MGA hailed Tuesday's decision as vindication in the long-running case. More.....

Grammy-nominated songwriter Kara DioGuardi will sit alongside Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson when the eighth season of "American Idol" premieres in January, the Fox network said Monday. "For the past seven seasons, Paula has had to endure the experience of being the only woman at the judges' table," said Mike Darnell, president, alternative programming of Fox, in a statement. "With Kara by her side, Paula has some backup and now there is going to be a lot more 'girl power' on the show," Darnell said.

DioGuardio's songs have been recorded by Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Celine Dion, Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood and Pink, among others. BREAKING NEWS: CANADIAN AND AUSTRALIAN JOURNALIST ABDUCTED IN SOMALIA!

Two foreign journalists were kidnapped in Somalia on Saturday, a government official said, and Somali citizens identified the hostages as freelance reporters from Australia and Canada. Family members confirmed to local media that Amanda Lindhout, a freelance journalist (above) originally from Alberta, was abducted in Somalia. Lindhout's mother, Lorinda, told CTV Edmonton that her daughter felt it was important to her as a journalist to be in the region.

"She has to be on the front lines, and she has to be with the people to tell their story. And the humanitarian side of everything was, is, huge for Amanda, to bring that to the light, so that people can help." Ajos Mohamed Nor, who works at Hotel Shamo in Mogadishu, where the two journalists were staying, said they did not return at 11 a.m. local time Saturday, as planned, after a brief trip outside the capital. Today both boys are lawyers, one Attorney General of Delaware and set for deployment in Iraq. He is that 3rd senator from Pennsylvania they call him as he was born in Scranton, PA. I went to college in PA and always thought Joe Biden was our Senator too. McCain may have a tougher time now even though I am a lifelong Republican.

WINFREY DENIES MAGAZINE COVER SNUB

TV mogul OPRAH WINFREY has denied snubbing her own magazine by refusing to pose fo the front cover. The legendary chatshow host publishes her own monthly magazine, O, and the cover always features a picture of the star. Winfrey was recently rumoured to have grown tired of the regular photoshoots and reportedly told editors at the publication to find other celebrities to grace the front page.

But a representative for the magazine has denied Winfrey will no longer be appearing on the O cover - insisting she will carry on her duties as normal. The spokesperson tells New York Post gossip column PageSix, "Oprah Winfrey has appeared on the cover of O... since its launch in 2000, and she will continue to do so. In fact, shoots for three upcoming covers will take place in early September."

To tell the truth, I have never liked that always Oprah cover. It's too self serving!

Fired anchor pleads guilty to e-mail snooping.

A fired TV newscaster admitted Friday that he hacked into his co-anchor's e-mail accounts, pleading guilty to one count of illegally accessing a computer. Larry Mendte admitted that he illegally viewed hundreds of Alycia Lane's e-mails from March 2006 to May 2008, at a time when leaked information about her personal life contributed to her downfall. Mendte and Lane co-anchored evening broadcasts together for four years at KYW-TV, the CBS affiliate in Philadelphia, until Lane's arrest in December after an alleged scuffle with New York police.

Months later, Mendte was fired and charged by federal prosecutors. His attorney, Michael Schwartz, has said Mendte cooperated from the start. KARDASHIAN TO APPRENTICE UNDER TRUMP?

THE WIRE star FELICIA "Snoop" PEARSON has been arrested on drugs charges, after police discovered marijuana in a bedroom at her house. The actress, who plays Snoop in the U.S. drama, was arrested on Wednesday (20Aug08) at her home in Baltimore, Maryland. Pearson was charged after police went to her home when she refused to co-operate as a witness in a murder trial. They discovered two cigars containing suspected marijuana in a bedroom, as well as loose plant material.
Pearson is required to testify as a witness to a 2005 murder.

US releases Iraqi journalist after 26 days.

The US military released an Iraqi television cameraman and other news organisations without charges, after 26 days in detention. Ali al-Mashhadani, who also works for the British Broadcasting Corporation and National Public Radio, had been detained twice before, including for a five-month stretch.

Al-Mashhadani was freed "because he was deemed not to be a security threat," Maj John C Hall, a US military spokesman, said in a statement. He did not elaborate. The organisations had demanded an explanation for al-Mashhadani's detention."If there are legitimate issues about him or any other journalist, let's have them aired openly and tested. If there are none, let them pursue their profession free from intimidation and fear," said Reuters editor-in-chief David Schlesinger.

The advocacy group Reporters Without Border demanded that the military halt what it described as arbitrary arrests of journalists in Iraq. In April, the US military released Bilal Hussein, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer working for the Associated Press, after holding him for two years. An Iraqi TV camera operator working for the AP in Tikrit, Ahmed Nouri Raziak, was detained by US forces in June. He was recently ordered held for at least six more months.

The US military maintains that a UN mandate gives it the authority to detain anyone indefinitely believed to pose a security threat to US-run coalition operations in Iraq.

Gary Glitter, the 1970s glam rocker and convicted pedophile, indicated his lust for under-age sex during an appearance on 'This Is Your Life'. Glitter starred on the ITV series' profiles in 1991 - six years before his arrest over child porn on his laptop. In the episode, a jokey reference to 'adolescent schoolgirls' in uniform prompted him to put his finger to his lips. He could also be clearly seen mouthing 'shush'.

The gesture and the whispered 'shush' were directed at actress and children's writer Tessa Dahl. Hosted by Michael Aspel, millions of ignorant fans were watching the programme without realising the significance. Dahl was recalling a time in the 1980s when broke Glitter was living at the home she shared with her teenage sister Lucy. She said Lucy 'used to pack the house with her adolescent schoolfriends in school uniforms.

"They would skive off school and she would bring them to the house and charge them pounds to gaze at Glitter," The Sun quoted Dahl, as saying. However, as Tessa, mum of model Sophie and daughter of kids' book author Roald, mentioned schoolgirls in uniform, grinning Glitter made the gesture.

Prison is not so bad, says Conrad Black.

Disgraced media tycoon Conrad Black, who was jailed in America earlier this year, has revealed to a Belfast Telergaph columnist he is finding imprisonment “not oppressive”. Canadian-born Black, was sentenced to six-and-a-half years for criminal fraud and obstructing justice earlier this year. He is serving out his sentence in prison at Coleman, Florida.

Black was a leading figure in Conservative circles and his newspaper group included The Daily Telegraph. However through correspondence with Ruth Dudley Edwards, whom he knows through mutual friends, he has revealed he finds jail “somewhat interesting”.

In one email he said: “...that this place is not oppressive, and the fellow residents are somewhat interesting in ways. I have practically unlimited access to email, the media, visitors, and the telephone, and spend some time tutoring high-school leaving candidates in English.”

That's nice to hear. Just stay there a little bit more. Defrauding investors is not a joke!

PAULA ABDUL UNDERGOES NECK SURGERY!

PAULA ABDUL has undergone surgery on her neck to relieve pain she has suffered for the past 20 years. According to reports, the American Idol judge checked into Los Angeles' Olympia Medical Center in early August (08) for a five-day stay. The 46-year-old singer's spine was first damaged during a cheerleading accident when she was 17. She was then involved in a car accident and a minor plane crash that worsened the damage.

She once told reporters, "I have four titanium plates in my neck. I've had 14 surgeries over the years." A source tells the National Enquirer of her recent surgery, "Paula wasn't about to begin another season of Idol living in constant pain. Auditions for the show begin in New York at the end of August, and she wanted to make sure she was feeling her best before hitting the road." (IG/NE)

The former star of sitcom "All of Us" spent nearly seven hours filing a report following an alleged altercation between herself, husband Misick, the couple's personal security, and Jeter, that took place on August 13 at the presidential palace, the premier’s mansion. VICTOR Conte, the jailed mastermind of the Balco drugs scandal in the US, says he warned the World Anti-Doping Agency about a drugs supplier working with elite athletes and suggested eight months ago sending disguised drug testers to Jamaica.

The International Olympic Committee has not released test results from the track and field program, but samples from the opening night's competition, including those of Jamaican 100 metres champion Usain Bolt, were expected soon. Bolt has been drug tested seven times since arriving in Beijing, the Jamaican team doctor, Herb Elliott, has said.

MEDIA ATTENTION: Gorilla refuses to let go of her dead baby.

Allwetter Zoo spokeswoman Ilona Zuehlke says the 3-month-old male baby died on Saturday but its 11-year-old mother continues to carry its body around. Zuehlke says such behavior is not uncommon to gorillas.

Zuehlke says the mother "is mourning and must say goodbye." The mother gorilla is named Gana. Signs were posted near Gana's enclosure Wednesday to explain the situation to visitors. A staff member is also present to answer questions. The baby was named Claudio and was Gana's second baby. She had a female baby in 2007 that now lives at the Stuttgart Zoo.

THE FLOW 93.5FM MORNING SHOW ANNIVERSARY PARTY.

What a beautiful Monday morning the 18th of August 2008. The famed morning show duo celebrated a big one. JJ King and Melanie Martin celebrated their first anniversary at Fran's restaurant downtown on Victoria and Shuter. There were friends and fans of the show, lots of cake and even a JJ and Melanie special breakfast made up of pancakes one stacked on top of the other. LOL! I have blogged the two's show for a year now and all the fun stuff that happens on that show.

Remember when I interviewed Melanie last year, we reflected on her getting into the radio career and the determination to be where you wanna be. Many memories has gone by from even when their new Producer arrived to join the show in Toronto. Johnny Michaels aka "Newbie" came to town, signed his apartment lease and before the ink was dry, roaches invaded his apartment! We at HipHossip told him to demand the "gel" treatment. Some kinda poison to roaches and safe for us humans and Newbie even thanked me for the advice at the MMVA awards when I saw him there at the press room interviews with JJ. One thing that makes this my morning show fave is that they are who they are and do it just natural. You feel like you have known them forever.

Melanie is the mother of a teenager and spends a lot of time with her longtime boyfriend as we know him on the show as the "BF." JJ is a married dude enjoying life constantly with his wife and Newbie has fascinated us with some silly things on the air that we felt like putting him on a most wanted list. Remember the baddest crime he committed? Going to his sister's wedding cake before the reception started and cutting a piece for himself and his girlfriend??? Whoa Newbie! The morning show is as real as it gets on Flow 93.5FM. Newbie was not present at Fran's as he had to be in the station controlling things for this unique remote show.

Team Flow's Lexi and Kid Famous were on hand as KJ became their instant pal! Lexi introduced KJ to JJ and Melanie and he even met Wayne Williams the Program Director who gave him ashirt. KJ promptly went to change in the washroom claiming he had to pee. Some city construction workers even came in to fulfill their fantasies by personally wishing Melanie Happy Anniversary. See that in the video below.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES star FELICITY HUFFMAN knew she had found the perfect personal trainer when her new fitness guru told her to eat more. The actress admits to having "a lot of trainers through the years," and was discouraged when they each tried to keep her below her ideal weight of 125 pounds (56.6 kilograms).

In the biggest celebrity union since California legalized same-sex marriage, DeGeneres, 50, and de Rossi, 35, wed Saturday night in an intimate ceremony at their Beverly Hills home, People and Us Magazine reported. A publicist for DeGeneres didn't immediately respond to messages from The Associated Press on Saturday.

After the California Supreme Court's ruling in May, the talk-show host announced that she and de Rossi would wed after four years together.The ceremony was attended by 19 guests, including DeGeneres's mom Betty and de Rossi's mother Margaret Rogers, who flew in from Australia for the occasion, People.com reported Saturday night.

DeGeneres said after winning her fourth consecutive Daytime Emmy for talk show host in June that a date had not been set, and that she would show "a tiny bit" of the nuptials on her show.

WOMAN WITH 3 DAUGHTERS GIVES BIRTH TO SEPTUPLETS!

That's 7!!! A 27-year-old Egyptian woman gave birth to septuplets early Saturday in the coastal city of Alexandria, family members and the hospital director said. Ghazala Khamis was in good condition after having a blood transfusion during her Caesarean section because of bleeding, said Emad Darwish, director of the El-Shatbi Hospital where she gave birth.

The newborns, four boys and three girls, weigh between 3.2 pounds and 6.17 pounds and are in stable condition, Darwish said. They have been placed in incubators in four hospitals that have special premature baby units, he said. Darwish decided to carry out the Caesarean section at the end of Khamis' eighth month of pregnancy due to the pressure on her kidneys. He said Khamis, who already has three daughters, took fertility drugs in an effort to have a son.

New porn channel lets Canadians strut their stuff!!

Canadians who may have become tired of being passed over as porn stars will have a new, home-grown outlet to showcase their erotic talents. Federal regulators have granted Alberta-based Real Productions approval to launch a new digital pornography channel, which promises to serve up at least 50 percent domestic content.

The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) approved the Category 2 pay-television service on Wednesday, allowing Northern Peaks to become "Canada's first adult video channel offering significant Canadian adult content." "I think as Canadians there is a bit of a tiredness in seeing all American stuff," Shaun Donnelly, president of Real Productions, said during an interview on Friday.

"There is always that thrill for something that is local and you get the sense that these are people you can meet at the supermarket." The CRTC only required 15 percent Canadian content, but Northern Peaks agreed to provide "not less than 50 percent of the broadcast day and not less than 50 percent of the evening broadcast period to Canadian programming," according to the license. "We want to be Canada's adult channel and I think to do that, 15 percent wouldn't cut it," Donnelly said.

Now that I'm one year old in Canada, I can savour those yearly things again. The Ex is one of them. The 29 TTC Dufferin bus at Wilson near the site of the explosion now. (I better find the detour stop). People poured through the iconic stone and concrete Princes' Gates yesterday to kick-off the 130th Canadian National Exhibition. Katherine McGreechan, a 36-year-old from Scarborough, and her three young nieces, were the first family to enter the grounds.

McGreechan won the honours from a CHUM FM contest, which also includes a seven day trip to Paris. "You don't ever think you're going to win a contest like that," she said. "And to be the first people picked is just amazing." The CNE, originally the Toronto Industrial Exhibition, opened in 1879 with a 25 cent admission fee. Michael Phelps wins 7th gold medal!

Michael Phelps won his seventh gold medal in Beijing on Saturday to join fellow American swimmer Mark Spitz on the highest peak of Olympic achievement and poised to climb the summit alone. The 23-year-old Phelps equalled Spitz’s record haul from the 1972 Munich Olympics when he won the men’s 100 metres butterfly final in 50.58 seconds touching out Serbia’s Milorad Cavic by 0.01 seconds, the smallest margin possible in the Olympic pool.

Our District Firefighter Chief Leek praised as 'modern-day knight.'

The slow and solemn toll of the fire bell echoed through the chapel, a last goodbye to the man many called a hero, a "modern-day knight." The bell traditionally summoned firefighters to duty and signalled the triumph over flames. This morning, it rang to honour Bob Leek, the firefighter who died at the scene of Sunday's massive propane explosion in Toronto.

"This is the last alarm for District Chief Bob Leek," Rev. G. David King told the thousands of mourners gathered for the funeral at The Prayer Palace in North York, one of the few chapels large enough to hold the crowd. Leek, 55, died after rushing to the site of the explosion that displaced thousands from a northwest Toronto neighbourhood.

The much-loved firefighter was on vacation when he got the 6:30 a.m. call to respond to the blaze. "He kissed his wife goodbye and said, 'Bobby to the rescue,' and he was off," his brother, Jim Leek, said in an interview with the Star. More at the source....

Al Jazeera receives first International Emmy nominations.

Al Jazeera's English-language coverage of the Myanmar crackdown and a current affairs program have earned the network its first International Emmy news nominations. Besides Al Jazeera English, the Qatar-based satellite news channel, nominated networks include the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., TV Globo in Brazil, Pro TV News in Romania, ITV News in the United Kingdom and SBS Broadcasting in the Netherlands.

Al Jazeera and TV Globo were the only two to receive nominations in both the news and current affairs categories. TV Globo received nominations last year in both categories as well. Al Jazeera English's "Kuala Lumpur News Hour" received the nomination for coverage of the military crackdown in Myanmar. ITV News was nominated for its coverage of Zimbabwe, and TV Globo received a nomination for coverage of a fatal TAM airliner crash. Pro TV News received a nomination for "Any Idea of What Your Kid is Doing Right Now?"

In the current affairs category, the public-affairs program "The Fifth Estate" snagged a nomination for the CBC, while "Hot Line" brought kudos for TV Globo and SBS' Peter R. de Vries received recognition for a story about Natalee Holloway. Former "American Idol" runner-up Clay Aiken, who has gone onto a singing career, said his "dear friend," music producer Jaymes Foster, gave birth on Friday to a son fathered by Aiken.

Aiken, 29, wrote on his Web site that his child, named Parker Foster Aiken, was born at a hospital in North Carolina. "My dear friend, Jaymes, and I are so excited to announce the birth of Parker Foster Aiken," he said. The singer added that Parker is "healthy, happy and as loud as his daddy" and that Foster "is doing quite well."

Aiken was a runner-up on the second season of No. 1-rated TV talent show "American Idol" in 2003. In January he debuted in the Broadway musical "Monty Python's Spamalot."

Toronto hosts party for popular video site YouTube.

Armed with cameras and costumes, about a hundred YouTube fans gathered at the Ontario Science Centre today for Canada's first YouTube party.

The event for the popular website kicked off yesterday and continued today as people sported sparkly Martians ears and greeted each other by YouTube names such as "Tahara" and "Tricky Ricky 77."

YouTube stars and wannabes signed shirts and captured an audience with songs, puppets and comedy acts.

Karen Hager, an associate director of events and program at the Ontario Science Centre, says the idea was sparked by the New York City meet up 777. Revellers from the online video sharing website met for the first time in "real life" last year in Manhattan's central park.

Hager says the event allows "YouTubers" and non-YouTubers to begin to understand the communication happening in the virtual world.

ANOTHER HOLLYWOOD DEATH: SINGER/ACTOR ISAAC HAYES DEAD AT 65!!

Soul singer and arranger Isaac Hayes, who won Grammy awards and an Oscar for the theme from the film "Shaft," has died, say sheriff's officials in Memphis, Tennessee. Hayes gained new fans late in his career by voicing "Chef" for the animated series "South Park."

Relatives found Hayes, 65, unconscious in his home next to a still-running treadmill, said Steve Shular, a spokesman for the Shelby County Sheriff's Department. Paramedics attempted to revive him and took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 2 p.m., the sheriff's department said. No foul play is suspected, the agency said in a written statement.

WE HAVE LOST A TORONTO FIREFIGHTER!!!!!!!

His name has not been released yet pending notification of the family but Division Chief David Sheen choked back tears when he just spoke at a press conference announcing the fireman was found by another one who discovered he had no vital signs! He died at the hospital. He never responded. Rest in Peace!

On April 9, 1998 in IOWA, 20 fire fighters from a volunteer fire department responded to a propane tank fire located at a turkey farm about 2.5 miles from the fire department. Upon arrival at the fire scene a decision was made to water down the buildings adjacent to the propane tank and allow the tank to burn itself out since the tank was venting. Some of the fire fighters positioned themselves between the burning propane tank and the turkey sheds and were watering down the buildings as the remaining fire fighters performed other tasks, e.g., pulling hose and operating pumps.

About 8 minutes after the fire fighters arrived on scene, the tank exploded. When the tank exploded it separated into four parts and traveled in four different directions. Two fire fighters about 105 feet from the tank were struck by one piece of the exploding tank and killed instantly. Six other fire fighters and a deputy sheriff, who had arrived on scene just before the explosion, were also injured.

NIOSH investigators concluded that, to prevent similar incidents, fire departments should:

• follow guidelines as outlined in published literature and guidebooks for controlling fire involving tanks containing propane

• adhere to emergency response procedures contained in 29 CFR 1910.120(q) - Emergency response to hazardous substance release procedures

• educate fire fighters to the many dangers associated with a propane tank explosion, which is also known as a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion (BLEVE).

Additionally, owners and users of propane tanks should:

• protect aboveground external piping against physical damage via fencing or some other means of protection

• equip propane tank piping with excess-flow valves and/or emergency shutoff valves, where applicable.

This is not the case whatsoever and people should understand that a propane tank, operating under normal circumstances will not explode or rupture. Safety devices and mechanisms are in place to prevent explosions, accidents and propane tank ruptures or breaches. WE ARE CLOSED TEMPORARILY!!!!!!!!!!!

A huge swath of northwest Toronto has been evacuated following a six-alarm fire early Sunday morning. Anyone in the area bounded by Sheppard in the north, 401 in the south, Dufferin in the east and Keele in the west should leave immediately. If you have friends or relatives there, officers are advising that you stay away and try to contact them by phone. TTC buses were on hand to cart anxious residents away from the smoky scene. Evacuees are being taken to the Yorkdale Mall.

Dozens of explosions at a north-end Toronto propane facility near Wilson Ave. and Keele St. shook a wide area of the city. It started just before 4 a.m. I heard the first one 3.50am on Sunday and police have evacuated us in the area. They are saying that we have to leave because the other 2 tanks are sitting on the railway tracks and may explode flattening homes. If you woke up, you will see the windows of the bank, supermarket and YOUR car blown out!

People that were let back in their homes to get emergency stuff went to the computers loading footage on YouTube, Facebook and MySpace! The authorities are appalled because people should be running for their lives! LOL! KJ will have audio reports later.

OK everybody! This is it! I'm always the bearer of bad news! I live on Wilson Street between Jane and Keele. I heard the explosion thinking it was another weekend gunshot. Then I thought it was some crazy thunder as you know Toronto thunders sound different from the rest of the world. I swear I was updating the sites and it shook me off my seat at 3.50am. Blogging may be temporarily suspended. Keep checking. I will try to do some mobile blogging. Our shelter is Yorkdale mall for now and I have the laptop. This is a WiFi hot spot in front of the Apple store. For those of you that don't know, This is Toronto's biggest mall and it's obviously CLOSED TODAY. One of my sons work in the movie theater in there and I just told him we are living there right now.

Update 11.30am: We are going to be evacuated to York University. That will be a wifi spot as it's a college. I'm gonna camp next to their Dept of Engineering. LOL! AT LEAST EVERYONE'S ALIVE!

MEDIA ATTENTION: YVETTE ADRIAN BEAKES: ALL THAT MATTERS TO ME EVERY AUGUST 9TH!!

7 YEARS!! There are some stories in the media you never forget. One such story is the carjacking death of my former Pharmacy colleague. The story is too sad for me to recount as it all started on August 9th 2001 and Yvette's body was found two days later in Baltimore, Maryland. Rest in Peace. If you know where Jason Beakes or her mom Laverna Cordova is, my # is 647-344-5390. Every year I have always tried to get in touch but it is always a dead end!

The last time I saw her, in fact......she had just babysat KJ for me after my house burned down and we were living in a hotel for the next 3 months. I always tell KJ about Yvette today. She took this picture and I will forever remember her! KJ loved Yvette so much at 6 months old that he did not want her leaving that day....not knowing that will be his last time seeing her. It was taken July 31st 2001.

All this because someone owed child support to another woman and they "needed to rob a woman in a nice car to pay it off" or go to jail the next week! Yvette was at the wrong place at the wrong time. This sad story had so many twists. A story that reflected the flaws in the 911 system. Someone saw everything go down and called 911 but they did NOTHING! Her mom sued in Federal court and ultimately lost the case.

I was that co-worker and our pharmacy District Manager Kelly Shanahan was the wife of the Police Chief Shanahan in that 911 jurisdiction that Yvette's mom lost that case to. It was too close to comfort. A mere tragedy nobody will forget. Yvette did not die in vain. She was 26.....Please take time to read the story of our beloved friend, colleague, daughter and sister/aunt.

TRAGEDY ALREADY: American at Olympics stabbed to death!

A Chinese attacker stabbed two Americans, killing the man and wounding the woman, who were attending the Olympic Games on Saturday, according to the U.S. Olympic Committee.

The man also injured a female Chinese tour guide before leaping to his death around noon from the second floor of the Drum Tower, a popular Beijing tourist site, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported. The USOC said the two Americans were family members of a coach for the U.S. men's indoor volleyball team. No other information about them was released.

The attacker was a 47-year-old man from the eastern Chinese city Hangzhou, a spokesman for the Beijing Municipal Government Information Office told Xinhua. A White House spokesman said President Bush, who is attending Olympic events Saturday, was told about the attack against the Americans.

The U.S. Embassy and the White House have offered the victims' families whatever assistance is needed, the spokesman said.

The ancient Drum Tower in Beijing, and the nearby Bell Tower, are popular tourist sites. Both sites told the time in the capital city, with the bell rung in the morning and drum beaten in the evening, throughout the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.

Victoria Osteen denies attacking flight attendant!

Victoria Osteen, in court because the flight attendant is suing her, said she pushed no one and even ended up cleaning the spill that sparked the incident herself. Continental Airlines flight attendant Sharon Brown claims that Osteen grabbed, elbowed and pushed her before the start of a 2005 flight to Vail, Colorado. Osteen and her husband, who also had been on board and testified earlier Friday, denied that account.

"I love people. I'm guilty of that," Osteen said. Dressed in an orange pant suit, Osteen was animated while testifying, often moving her hands while she talked. A couple of times during her testimony, she cried. Joel Osteen called the incident "an unfortunate misunderstanding." He testified that his wife never raised her voice or grabbed the flight attendants, though he said he could not hear his wife's voice from his seat. More from the source.....

MEDIA ATTENTION: Nigerian official accused of hiring witch doctor!

The AP reports that Police on Friday arrested the head of a federal agency charged with developing Nigeria's impoverished southern oil region after allegations that the man spent millions of dollars on a witch doctor in hopes of vanquishing a rival.

President Umaru Yar'Adua announced Friday that the head of the Niger Delta Development Corporation, Sam Edem, had been suspended from his job after local media reports of Edem's large expenditure on black magic. Police later said he had been arrested. The police said they were investigating the source of the roughly $4 million Edem reportedly spent on hiring a sorcerer to hex and kill another development official.

The federal government said it was investigating how Edem, a civil servant in a country of low wages, had amassed the fortune he used to engage the sorcerer. The government said in a statement that Edem wasn't available for comment. It added that he hasn't denied any of the charges. Although Nigeria's 140 million people are split between Christianity and Islam, black magic is still prevalent in some rural areas.

Police said in a statement that Edem contracted the witch doctor to kill a subordinate who Edem believed harbored him ill will. Edem also wanted the sorcerer to help compel a state governor to award Edem "juicy contracts," according to the police statement. The police said Edem was "incensed" when none of the work contracted to the witch doctor had been achieved and had demanded a total refund. The witch doctor refused.

Nigeria is regularly ranked among the world's most-corrupt nations. Investigators say some $400 billion has been stolen or squandered since the country's 1960 independence from Britain.

BREAKING NEWS: Comic actor Bernie Mac dies at age 50!

Earlier this week, he was telling the world that he was still alive! Now he is DEAD! What a shame! Comic actor Bernie Mac died early today of complications from pneumonia, according to a family member and his publicist. He was 50. He had been hospitalized in Chicago, Illinois, for more than a week with the lung infection.

"When I got the call this morning, it was just devastating news," said Chicago Sun-Times columnist Stella Foster. "Let's face it: Bernie Mac was one of a kind. He was the best of the best in terms of giving you a good laugh." Smith previously said the pneumonia wasn't related to sarcoidosis, a lung disease Mac had, which had been in remission since 2005, according to the AP.

Mac caused a stir in July with some jokes he made during a fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, AP reported. Mac -- born Bernard Jeffrey McCollough -- starred in the Fox television series "The Bernie Mac Show." His film roles included the "Ocean's Eleven" series, "Friday," "Get on the Bus," "Transformers" and "Bad Santa."

Opening arguments were set for Thursday in a lawsuit that accuses Victoria Osteen of assaulting Continental Airlines flight attendant Sharon Brown before the start of a 2005 flight from Houston to Vail, Colorado. The lawyer for Victoria Osteen called the lawsuit silly and denied that her client assaulted Brown. Brown's attorney, Reginald McKamie, said he hopes the trial will show "that celebrity status doesn't take precedence."

Victoria Osteen is co-pastor at Lakewood Church, where her husband, Joel Osteen, preaches and where about 42,000 people flock each week. Joel Osteen's weekly television address is broadcast nationally and internationally. Brown alleges Victoria Osteen threw her against a bathroom door and elbowed her in the left breast during an outburst over a stain on her first-class seat. The Federal Aviation Administration fined Victoria Osteen $3,000 for interfering with a crew member.

SAD ASS SHAME: Heath Ledger case closed!!!

The US Attorney's Office official investigation into Heath Ledger's death has been closed without any charges being filed. After Heath - who had a two-year-old daughter with former fiancee Michelle Williams - died of accidental prescription drugs overdose in January, officials wanted to determine where he had obtained powerful painkillers Oxycontin and Vicodin - two drugs for which he had no prescription.

Despite reports Heath's close friend Mary-Kate Olsen - who was subpoenaed by a federal grand jury on April 23 - would be forced to involve herself in the investigation, the probe has now been closed without the subpoena being enforced. When Mary-Kate - who was the first person Heath's masseuse called after she found him dead in his New York apartment - was issued with the subpoena, her attorney began negotiating with authorities, and was said to be trying to get the 22-year-old star immunity from prosecution before she would testify in the case.

He released a statement saying: "Ms. Olsen had nothing to do with any drugs found and has already provided relevant information for the investigation." A coroner's report showed Heath died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs for pain, anxiety and sleep.

Celebrated CNN reporter Cooper took a swipe at the Mean Girls star's younger sister Ali while hosting live U.S. morning show Live with Regis & Kelly on Tuesday (05Aug08). The journalist branded Ali and Dina's reality show, Living Lohan, a "train wreck", before comparing the 14-year-old to a 60-year-old and a "striptease person".

The comments infuriated mum Dina, who hit back at Cooper in America's OK! magazine, warning, "People are just cruel! This is bad karma for him." And now the teen's dad Michael has also lashed out at the TV reporter, insisting he has no right to pass judgement on the Lohan family. He tells America's Access Hollywood, "I think Anderson Cooper is an opinionated, hypocritical idiot who should be an adult and keep his opinion to himself. "He is the last person to judge anyone, when he and his own family have their own issues."

Damn! Don't you like it when Dina and Michael Lohan are on the same side? They need to incorporate that into Dina's reality show.

TOM SELLECK SET FOR DANCING WITH THE STARS.

Former MAGNUM, P.I. star TOM SELLECK is set to show off his fancy footwork in the next series of U.S. show DANCING WITH THE STARS. Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will spend the night in jail after a judge ruled he violated the terms of his bond in his perjury case by making a business trip to Canada and not informing the court. The mayor made an unauthorized trip to Windsor, Canada last month, leading the county prosecutor’s office to request Kilpatrick be punished and triggering the judge’s ruling. Only minutes earlier, the mayor offered an apology to the court, telling Giles that for seven months, “I’ve been living in an incredible state of pressure and scrutiny.” But Giles sent the mayor to jail anyway, telling him he would have given any defendant the same treatment.

Toni Braxton and Kim Kardashian are reportedly set to appear in the new series of US TV talent show 'Dancing with the Stars'. The 'Unbreak My Heart' singer and the curvy socialite are two of the celebrities who will be testing their skills on the dancefloor when the fourth season of the show begins on September 22. A show insider told In Touch Weekly magazine: "The cast is eclectic and diverse - we've got young, old, gay, straight, dance professionals and people who've never danced before. Q: What is the biggest challenge you've faced at 680News?

MICHAEL LEACH: Making the transition from being a night owl to waking
up before the sun.

Q: What was the most memorable story you've covered in your career at
680News?

MICHAEL LEACH: I've only been here since February, so I don't have a
huge volume of stories to choose from. Probably the Queen Street fire --
that story broke as we went to air. As the sun came up that morning we
could see the smoke billowing over downtown. It brought home the
immediacy of what we do. We are there as things are happening.

Q: What is the most important personality trait and skill one needs to
be a successful broadcast journalist?

MICHAEL LEACH: Perseverance.

Q: Give me a quote about your position/experience here at 680News.

MICHAEL LEACH: I'm kind of like the Adam Clayton (U2's bassist) of the
show. I stand in the corner, look good and try not to mess up. 680News'
morning show is made up of the most talented people in the business;
I'm quite lucky to be able to be a part of it.

MICHAEL LEACH spent the first 16 years of his life on the Prairies in
Winnipeg and Calgary, before moving east to Ontario in 1992. Mike's
broadcasting career had a modest beginning at Orangeville Community Radio
in September of 2001. He graduated from Humber College's radio
broadcasting program in 2004 and made the jump to the big leagues, taking a
position as a technical producer at the FAN 590.

After two-and-a-half years with the FAN, Mike decided to take a leap
into satellite radio, joining XM Radio's NHL Home Ice Channel in May
2006. He remained with XM Radio for a year before returning to the FAN in
2007. Fast forward to February 2008, he decided to trade in late nights
at the FAN for early mornings with Paul, Lisa and the rest of the
morning crew at 680News.

STERN SIDEKICK LANGE CHECKS INTO REHAB!

Shock jock HOWARD STERN's radio sidekick ARTIE LANGE has checked into rehab to be treated for drug and alcohol abuse, according to reports. The 40-year-old comedian admitted himself into an intensive outpatient rehabilitation programme at the weekend, his spokesperson Lewis Kay has confirmed. Lange cancelled a series of stand-up shows and appearances, including his pal Bob Saget's Comedy Central Roast on Sunday (03Aug08), to seek treatment. A source tells the New York Post that Stern's sidekick "felt awful for not being there for Bob, but needed to make his health a priority". Lange reportedly plans to return to Stern's Sirius radio show following treatment.

Time Inc. Studios is teaming up with management-production company the Collective and XYZ Films to produce features and documentaries based on articles published in Time Inc. magazines. The publisher aims to broaden its revenue stream by participating in film optioning.

Sirius Chief Karmazin Buys 2 Million Shares.

MelKarmazin, CEO of Sirius XM Radio, is buying 2 million shares of the satellite broadcaster, bringing his stake to more than 8.5 million shares, according to a regulatory filing. Karmazin now owns $11.8 million of the stock directly and 33,800 shares through a retirement plan.

NBC is not being sold by GE!

General Electric has no plans to sell NBC Universal, says chief marketing officer Beth Comstock. Some investors would like GE to consider selling NBC after the Olympics, due to the division's slow growth. CEO Jeff Immelt continues to see NBC "as a part of GE's future."

YouTube to air Olympic games.

Google's video-sharing site YouTube will show daily coverage of the Beijing Olympics in India, Nigeria and 75 other countries where broadcasters haven't bought exclusive rights to the programming. YouTube promises to block the content in areas where rights have been sold to others.

A Toronto police officer said Tuesday he has heard "disturbing" third-hand information about the life of a seven-year-old girl who was found dead on Sunday, and now he's pleading for people with first-hand knowledge to come forward with details.

GREYHOUND TO PROMPTLY REMOVE OLD BUS ADS DUE TO BEHEADING MURDER!!!

The horrific murder of a young man aboard a Greyhound bus last week has prompted the company to remove all traces of a recent ad campaign that may now be considered in extremely poor taste. The Greyhound advertisements tried to lure potential riders by highlighting the peaceful and worry-free aspects of travelling by bus, and included the tag line: "There's a reason you've never heard of 'bus rage'."

The campaign was launched last year and officially ended before 22-year-old Tim McLean was brutally murdered last week, but company spokeswoman Abby Wambaugh admitted some of the adverts are still up. The company is working to take them down as soon as possible for fear they may now be found highly inappropriate. Meanwhile crazy ass suspect Vince Weiguang Li, 40, is charged with second-degree murder. He appeared in court Tuesday where his only communication involved muttering the words "please kill me," and was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. It is said that they found flesh from the victim in his pockets and he was eating it.
